What is Fictionkin?

being fictionkin is the act of idenfitiying as something or someone fictional based on the belief that they are that thing / person .this includes fictional characters, species, items, substances, and / or anything related to fiction .

But what does that mean?

it means what it sounds like, identifying as something from fiction!keyword: as. meaning that you know / believe you are that fictional thing or person; relating to or identifying with something from fiction is very different but will be covered later.

Short F.A.Q.

“are all fictionkin delusional? do they not just suffer from [x] disorder?” no! not at all! this is a very popular misconception, and while mental illness and delusions can influence kintypes, for a majority of fictionkin they have no relation!“aren’t fictionkin just roleplayers?” absolutely not. while some fictionkin may also be roleplayers, and while some may even roleplay as their kintype, the two things are not related in any way, shape, or form. different communities, different things.“so is being fictionkin just a coping mechanism?” no, it is not. fictionkin is a part of your identity, while a coping mechanism is simply something you do / have. you may be mistaking copinglinkers with fictionkin, which while they are fictionfolk and apart of our community, are still different than fictionkin."can you pick your kintype/s?” no. you can choose to reinforce kin related feelings, or ignore them; but you cannot force or pick a kintype you do not already have an inherent connection to."i think i may be fictionkin but am overwhelmed by all the terms, what should i do?” relax! not everybody needs to know every single term! hell, i've been part of the kin community for about 5 years now and i still learn new things everyday! start off slow with the basic terms related towards your identity ( ie kintype, types of shifts, canon/source, ect .) and then slowly move out to other terms! a good place to start when researching terminology is the alterhuman dictionary

But how does it work?

idenfiying as fictionkin, like all things related to identity, is a very personal thing and every persons reasoning / belief system for using said label will differ; however, for the sake of convenience i will be listing a number of common reasons for said identification below!reincarnation: the belief in past lives. more specifically, someone who believes they had a past life or multiple past lives as their kintype/s, will be their kintype/s in a future life, or were in some way meant to be their kintype/s in this life; this is a very common belief both inside and out the 'kin community and one i'm sure you, the reader, are familiar with.infinite universes / the multiverse theory: the belief in multiple universes. more specifically, the theory that there are many alternate universes that exist, along with our own, and that things that are considered 'fictional' in this universe, actually exist in another. this is also a common belief found in the 'kin community and is often linked with reincarnation, but not always.psychological origins: this is less a belief and moreso a reasoning, one that is, again, also common in the 'kin community although you do see it mentioned less imo. this is a very broad definition and can include anything from neurodivergence, to mental illness, to delusions, ect; the main point is that it's a persons fictionkinnity derived from a psychological origin; this is not the same as a copinglink and for the comfort of both others and i, do not confuse the two.parallel lives: the belief of another existence which is seemingly chronologically parallel ( ie parallel lives ). i am unsure how to explain this in a more in-depth way however if you're interested i recommend this postthese are the four most common that i've seen, like i mentioned above though, this is not all of them. if you for any reason believe you are something or someone fictional, then you are fictionkin. 'kin at its core is the act of identifying as something from fiction, and that is the only 'requirement' for being fictionkin that you need.
